Goji Juice

The foundation of youth: a tiny red berry

To discover a food unlike any other, you have to go where the conditions are rare. In the pristine Himalayan Mountains, the exceptional conditions have created an unusually alkaline soil and a tremendous temperature range (-16 degrees F to 102 degrees F)

But the food is not new. In fact, noted poet Liu Yuxi wrote of a famous well at a Buddhist temple during the Tang Dynasty, its water fortified with Goji berries that had fallen into it from overhanging vines. Even those in their 80's who drank from the well had rosy complexions, no white hair and all their teeth!

The Well of Youthful Living

A cool well beside the monk's house
A clear spring feeds the well and the water has great powers
Emerald green leaves grow on the wall
And deep red berries shine like copper
The flourishing branch like a walking stick
The old root in a dog's shape signals good fortune
The goji nourishes body and spirit
Drink of this well and enjoy a long life

~Liu Yuxi (772-842 Tang Dynasty poet)
