Welcome to September's Editorial, how time does fly! This month is on Posture,
Balance and Weight Loss. Currently to maintain a healthy posture I am
practicing a daily set of yoga moves for a time span of 25 minutes each
session. When it is a sunny day and not wild and windy weather I enjoy a
brisk 40 minute power walk with light hand weights as it helps to keep
my back upright and the weights help to lengthen my posture to then help
with my balance. I also incorporate a short set of abdominal crunches and
squats as these two are great for back strengthening.
To me balance, posture and weight loss
all work together in harmony. Timing is the key to achieving these results. In
this editorial I will be covering many aspects which help to put these areas
of your health into a reasonable and achievable approach to maintaining a
healthy body almost all of the time. Please refer to my charts for examples
and posture corrective behaviours.
In terms of food, not much is being placed on the importance of maintaining
our physical activity levels. While caloric intake has increased in the last
20 years, physical activity has been reduced by a much greater extent, meaning
that we are burning less calories
while eating more.
The priority should be to schedule in your exercise sessions each week and
walk as much as you can in your day to day world. Ideally you should aim for
at least three high-intensity exercise sessions (power walking, jogging,
cycling, gym, swimming) each week, as well as plenty of walking each day for
long-term weight control. Keep in mind the more you move, the less pressure
there is on watching what you eat.
Within your posture and balance you will find a connection there to your
cardiovascular system. The challenge is for the cardiovascular system to
strengthen and build endurance which can contribute to weight loss.
You see in
eastern philosophy generally speaking, a healthy body is governed by a healthy
state within, the internal environment so to speak. Where the balance and
posture work hand in hand and in conjunction with your muscles, tone,
flexibility, breathing, healthy digestive process and a positive emotional
outlook.Balance to the eastern world is the essence of living, as well as the
basis to each individuals own personality.
My suggestion to you is to have a plan, work with your own ideas of health and
back them up with research. If you have the facts or ask the questions you
will be well informed and therefore able to make a constructive choice.
In concluding this month's
editorial I'd like to say that meditation can also bring amazing results to the
holistic way of being and have outlined three possible areas for further reading;
Qi Gong, meditation and yoga.
Qi Gong
The principles of Eastern Philosophy begin with a shifting of focus. In regards to your energy flow. A healthy energy flow starts with a healthy cardiovascular system, which is governed by your 'internal environment'; being your muscles (strong ones), tone, flexibility, joint mobility, circulation, breathing rhythm, posture, healthy digestion and a positive emotional outlook.
The challenge is for the cardiovascular system to strengthen and build endurance which can contribute to weight loss.
The theory behind Qi Gong is the combination of yin and yang (passive and active) energy which is called chi.
"In Qi Gong we believe that we are constantly being charged with energy. this energy comes from the earth, our work place and home, even other people. It also comes from the things we eat, our activities, and even our psychological state."
--Dr Hong Lin, Mastering Miracles
Meditation
A state of stillness for a 15 minute period, you are sitting or lying down and letting go of all thinking, withdrawing your energy from focusing externally, allowing your breathing to take your attention inside, if you like. Becoming aware of the tingling energy within your body-relaxing, breathing.
Experiencing that you are different, distinct from your mind, your thoughts, your feelings and possibly the chaos's around you.
Visualising your dream, goal actions necessary to become your true self. When you return from meditation you return;meditation can be a slow outdoor bike ride watching the beach or gardens, with no distractions, meditation should allow the aspects discussed earlier to be embraced by you!
* Rejuvenated
* Renewed
* Happy to return to what you were doing
* More energy, time and complete confidence
* Improved mental capacity

Moksha Yoga

Satyananda - The primary focus is meditation and breathing control. This style offers low to medium intensity exercise.
