I thought why not tackle pain management this month. Not only through the experience in clinic practice however life practice has taught me how to control and manage pain within the body. At any given time, around one third of Australians are in pain. It has been shown that people who learn self-management skills lower their levels of felt pain. It is important to learn these skills, and to deal with the associated stress and depression in constructive ways.
The long term use of some medications have side effects which hinder the quality of a person's life! Therefore the value of developing self- management skills and effective coping skills I believe becomes the priority, and the fact that one believes that medications help to cope better is untrue.
There are functional ways in coping with pain management. The assistance of complimentary therapy is the starting point! Which therapy is best suited depends entirely on you, the individual.
Pain management has a role in identifying the precise source of the problem and isolating the optimal treatment. Therefore, we begin a process of elimination, or as one of my clients likes to put it, we have a "Re-tox" as well as "De-tox" time in our healing development? This means that in order to find out your best suited therapy, you will need trial and error as well as experimentation with possibly the wrong things before you know what is right for you. I am a very big believer in this theory and then sticking to the one that best suits, optimally what works for you!
So what have you to choose from, I want only to outline the typical treatments available and if you have other avenues to explore proceed with purpose as they all lead to the same place - being; recovery, self-management and to reduce the risk of injury happening again.
Chiropractic
- A diagnosis comprising of the concept that your nervous system co-ordinates all the bodies functions, and the disease results from a lack of normal nerve function.
- The term "chir" - referring to the hand + "prassein", to do = to do with hands.
- This treatment combines spinal adjustments; effective for muscle spasms, back, neck, tension headaches, and leg pain. And is used in conjunction with massage,(physical therapy), psychological counseling, and dietary and exercise considerations.
Physiotherapy
- The aim of this physical therapy is to restore proper functioning to the body, in the cases of permanent damage,(disease or injury) the focus is on reducing the impact of the dysfunction.
- Rehabilitation of sporting injuries, back pain, neurological conditions (stroke), multiple sclerosis, spinal injury, cardiothoracic conditions(emphysema, asthma, and chronic bronchitis)
- The Physiotherapist uses a broad range of approaches to assist in reducing injury; Manual Therapy such as massage, stretching, manual resistance training, joint mobilisation and manipulation.
- Electrotherapy for instance ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), laser therapy and diathermy(Heat is used here as a therapeutic application).
- Exercise programs in area of posture training, muscle strengthening, cardiovascular training and stretching.
- Other services include taping and splinting, correcting flawed sporting techniques, providing or offering information on equipment aids such as wheelchairs and walking frames.
Acupuncture
- Acupuncture being safe and effective is a form of health care. Traditionally acupuncture is used to treat disease and is also used as a preventative medicine.
Myotherapy
- Myotherapy treats soft tissue injury for example; (muscle, tendon, ligament and fascia). Or, the pain felt for these types of injury can be often described as a 'deep ache', 'tightness' or 'tenderness' in an area.
- A Myotherapist may exercise massage, hot/cold therapy, dry needling and corrective exercises.
Massage
- Benefits are because stimulation of the blood supply, allows toxins in the muscles to fade away. Calming the nervous system, and most all other systems massage eases pain and discomfort and tones muscles to improve joint mobility.
- For pain-management the focus is on injuries in sports people or athletes. Reducing "down time" and helping put one back on track and into your game sooner.
- Deep Tissue Massages deep into the muscle body to release stored tension and toxins. Pressure points are used to help the muscle restore to full strength.
Relaxation Tech.
- Qi Gong
- Meditation
- Yoga Refer to links in September's editorial found, bottom section of the page.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
- Used on the body it is a minute electrical current that passes through the skin via electrodes, prompts a pain-diminishing reaction from the body itself.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- This is a process by which learning to change how you think has an influence on how you feel and behave about pain. It forms part of a process of self-management of chronic pain.
Osteopathy
- When the body is free of restrictions in movement, osteopathy believes the body can cope better with pain, stress and disease and has the potential to heal itself.
- Restrictions on the body are created by all kinds of physical or emotional stresses. Whether it is poor posture, how we use our bodies in the workplace, on the sporting field or after an accident.
- The role of the osteopath is to remove these patterns of restrictions so the body is aligned correctly.
