Welcome to Touch of Nature.

"Time shows all travellers to listen within, your heart knows the way."

Welcome again to another Touch of Nature editorial. This month I am focusing on importance of Aromatherapy in well being.

The benefits of aromatherapy have been recognised by hospitals in the UK, however here in Australia there is need for more awareness. Though aromatherapy is slowing becoming recognised throughout the hospitals, hospices and nursing homes as part of our Australian health care system.

Aromatherapy image It has taken me some 13 years to come across a meaningful definition that states the truth in a nutshell, and demonstrates how an aromatherapist utilizes their skill to benefit you and your sessions:

"An aromatherapy session comprises of a brief yet comprehensive analysis addressing the anatomical systems of the body combining, the purity and aroma, of essential oils, the history of aroma and the art of perfumery from antiquity."

This systemic approach is useful because each individual blend is based on the structure of the 12 major body systems and the belief that well-being is the result of emotional, spiritual and mental accord.

Massage is a healing art. To fully understand the benefits of the aromatherapy massage it is important to become aware of the autonomic nervous system (responsible for controlling the process which takes place within the body but not under conscious control.)

Massage image Generally massage enhances blood circulation, assists lymph flow, relieves aches and pains, enhances relaxation and interestingly also enhances a more optimistic outlook on life.

The main techniques used are excellent for toning, helping the ganglions (autonomic pathways) and helps elimination of toxins. The similarity of locations(of ganglia) compare to the position of the Chinese acupuncture points in Chinese Medicine.

Their use into your daily life, work place and environment maybe by use of blended oils as part of your daily routine, similar to perfume. If you're low in energy on a particular day, one drop of the joyous and uplifting essential oils of Orange, Lemon, Mandarin and Geranium make a perfect synergy for a pick me up! (See Clarity) If on the other hand you are having trouble inducing sleep, I suggest on the back of your neck one single drop of Sandalwood, Frankincense and Lavender essential oils. (See Sweet Dreams) For more ideas check out the Aromatherapy Page.

Essential oils image These bottled essential substances should not be underestimated. Similar in nature to pharmaceuticals, that treat, alleviate and cure the signs and symptoms of ailments. Aromatherapy can work to clinically reduce infection, symptoms and treat the reaction of the causes.

From a holistic view point the art has been proven by the use of clinical trials by some well known doctors in the field of lymphatic disorders. Therefore the oils them selves are proving to have particular beneficial properties for healing and restoration.

"The essential oil of peppermint has a special connection to everything aqueous, to blood, to tissue fluid, lymph, spinal and cerebral fluid. The refreshing effect on all tissues lies in the liberating influence on the lymphatic stream? The oil has a cleansing, purifying and antiseptic effect on mucous membranes. It accelerates and increases their re sorption ability."

--Dr.Gumbel, Chapter 26, The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy, Battaglia.

Therefore it is important to note that essential oils are chemical constituents made up of components that have clinical properties, so that a blend for particular causes, with common effects can be administered with the whole person in mind.
